As a farmer's daughter, a gardener, a hiker and a child of the Creator, I have always loved the natural world, particularly the plant world. I remember wonder-filled interactions with even small, close-up parts of nature when I was young: in a fort, watching an owl or following a creek.
As a teacher, I am convinced that our students and their education are better off if they have the opportunity to experience that sense of wonder, too, because it is widely recognized as being good, even urgent, in the face of passivity, anxiety, physical illiteracy, nearsightedness, restlessness and rootlessness.

I have taught for 12 years in Ontario, and I now teach third grade in Kent County, Michigan.
