Start Summer with a Splash!

How many more days until summer vacation?  Does your class do end-of-year fun activities?  If so, just add water!  Here are some water games and activities for a Final Days Festival, or just for recess.

First up, the traditional game of a spoon race with a twist: walking along trying to balance a cup of water on your head without trying to spill. Twist a bandana or a towel into a ring to help balance the cup, the way women do in African countries. Quite a challenge even for adults.

The Biggest Splash*
Below is one of those games which just has to be experienced. It’s called “The Biggest Splash” and that’s just what you have to do. Find an object and drop it in the tin to make the biggest splash. Now that’s a bull's eye game with a difference! (Note: chalk works well on concrete but not as well on asphalt. Use tempera paint instead.)

Water Balloon Volleyball**
Of course, water balloon games are great. Older students may like the challenge of Water Balloon Volleyball.  Rather than playing with a volleyball, the referee places a water balloon into the towel of the serving team. The servers will pull back on the towel and throw the water balloon over the net to the opposing team. The other team will try to catch and then throw the balloon over the net to the other side.

Also enjoy with a group the simple activity of holding a tarp taut while someone pours a bucket of water on it. Watch the water move around as though it's alive, while trying (unsuccessfully...) to keep it on the tarp.
