Forest Schools

Have you heard of forest schools?

This preschool or Kindergarten concept has its roots (pun...) in Europe with early adopters in Denmark starting already in the 1950's, but gaining ground (pun 2...) in the last few decades.

On this side of the Atlantic, the first forest school in Canada opened in 2007, and more interest is growing (pun 3...) every year.

It's difficult to be a nay-sayer about such a healthy idea.  My main question is about limiting forest schools to small children. It gives me the impression that such outdoor goodness is fine for them, but when educating needs to get serious, it is not realistic anymore.

And I suppose if there is no forest on your school grounds, forest school is unrealistic for any age group. But outdoor learning isn't!

There is no need to do All In thinking about outdoor learning.  To assume that it's a choice between 5 hours outside per day or nothing. Or outdoor learning in a forest or nothing. Please find outdoor lessons and activities here on this blog that supplement your grade level's science curriculum expectations and that can be done on most school grounds.
